Are you ready for REAL ID?
Do you know if you have a REAL ID? Passed by Congress in 2005, the REAL ID Act enacted the 9/11 Commission's recommendation that the Federal Government “set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver's licenses.” The Act established minimum security standards for state-issued driver's licenses and identification cards and prohibits Federal agencies from accepting for official purposes licenses and identification cards from states that do not meet these standards. These purposes are:
Accessing Federal facilities
Boarding federally regulated commercial aircraft
Entering nuclear power plants
What does that mean for UBC members? Any member who has not upgraded to the REAL ID compliant driver’s licenses will be affected in the following ways:
They may be unable to enter nuclear power plants.
They may be unable to access federal facilities.
They will be unable to board an aircraft without a passport.
They will be unable to complete the application for a TWIC card, SIDA badge, CFATS credential, PIV card, DOD Common Access Card, etc.
The enforcement deadline for the REAL ID is October 1, 2020. Though most states are now issuing drivers’ licenses that are compliant with the REAL ID, not all members have yet upgraded to them.
