MILLWRIGHT COMMITTEE FINDS CREATIVE SOLUTIONS
Updated: Dec 7, 2018
It’s been two and a half years since the Eastern District Millwright Collaboration Committee was formed as a way for the UBC and its employers to work together to build market share. This year, committee members focused on utilizing the UBC's Small Conveyor Agreement to capture more work in the distribution center sector.
Because contractors were already a part of the working committee, the District was able to respond to their needs in preparation for bidding on facilities contracts. Their approach now not only puts more of our current members to work, but it also provides a path to pre-apprenticeship for new members. This framework enabled contractors to secure work at two existing Amazon Distribution Centers in Staten Island, NY and Sparrow Point, VA.
As more commerce moves towards the online model and distribution centers become more prevalent, this committee will keep finding new and creative solutions for winning the work.
